The vast majority of wind-up torches and lanterns are actually very good, so you can’t go far wrong. If you’re travelling in a country with unreliable sunlight, then we recommend the wind-up lights rather than the solar-powered lights.

Using solar power, your light will take several hours to charge up (compared to wind-up torches that take just minutes to charge up).

You can just leave the torch in the sunlight at home or in the car so that the torch is constantly trickle-charging. Then you’ll find the torch is ready for use in emergencies. Therefore solar-powered torches and lanterns are perfect for occasional use

Hand-Powered Torches and Lanterns

Using hand-power means that you can use your light both at night time and during the day. Therefore if the rechargeable battery runs out, you can just wind up the torch again to get some more light. This is ideal for countries with unreliable sunlight.

With wind-up torches, you get an impressive amount of light from a reasonably short amount of effort. Often, you’ll get around 30 to 60 minutes of light from 1 minute of hand-power! This makes hand-powered torches and lanterns perfect for frequent use.
